Reminds me of graffiti I came across on the Augusta, Ga., canal, dated 1869! I wrote my own post on it a couple of years back: http://southcarolina1670.wordpress.com/2011/08/30/pondering-the-enigma-of-142-year-old-grafitti/
Thanks, Monique! Cotton, I read your blog and am inspired to do some more research. This marking was left by some builders of a dam along Sand Creek. Only remnants remain of the dam today.
