November 25, 2011

On a  cold, gray, windy, post-Thanksgiving day, D., E., Cesar and I headed to the woods.

Thanks for bringing a bit of the loveliness that KS offers to me! These are such familiar and beautiful sights.

  2. It was a great afternoon escape.

What do you call that big green tennis ball like thing? Is there a walnut inside?

  4. Hi Tammy,

Those are hedge “apples” or hedge balls. Don’t they look little brains? I love their color. The outside is very hard and the inside is stringy.

Farmers around here in the ’30s planted rows of hedge trees (also called Osage Orange) for wind breaks. We still use the branches for fence posts. The apples are not edible for humans, but raccoons seem to like them.
